On 19th September 2025, popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg tragically passed away in Singapore while scuba diving. He was there to attend the 4th North East India Festival. During the dive, he reportedly experienced breathing difficulties. Despite being rescued, given CPR, and rushed to the Singapore General Hospital, doctors could not revive him.

A Musical Journey That Inspired Generations

Born as Zubeen Borthakur on November 18, 1972, in Assam, Zubeen Garg became one of the most celebrated cultural icons of Northeast India. His career spanned over three decades as a singer, composer, lyricist, actor, and director. He was widely loved for blending Assamese culture with mainstream Indian music.

His nationwide breakthrough came with the Bollywood hit “Ya Ali” from the film Gangster (2006). Over the years, he lent his voice to songs in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and many other languages.

Tributes and Condolences

News of his untimely demise shocked millions of fans. Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed grief, calling him one of Assam’s favourite sons. Fellow musicians, actors, and fans from across India poured heartfelt condolences, remembering him as a legend gone too soon.
